Integrated Step-down LED Drivers are innovative solutions for Retail and Architectural Lighting Systems
Exar’s innovative XRP7603 and XRP7604 step-down LED drivers drive LEDs up to 0.5 amp and 1 amp respectively. With a 4.5V to 29V operating range they are able to support most retail and architectural lighting systems which typically use 12 volt or 24 volt power sources. These minimal footprint solutions, which are no bigger than the combined size of the high brightness LED and its heatsink, will also find ready applications in new consumer electronics devices as the latest compact LED projectors.
These LED drivers, capable of driving high power, high brightness LEDs which are pin-to-pin compatible with Exar’s earlier 2 amp rated SP7600, will also find ready applications in new consumer electronics devices as the latest generation of compact LED projectors.
Operating at a frequency of 1.2MHz with integrated loop compensation, Exar’s family of high power step-down LED drivers fit within a minimal solution footprint -- merely the combined size of the high brightness LED and its heatsink. A low 200mV feedback reference voltage reduces the power dissipation in the current sense resistor while maximizing efficiency at up to 95%. According to David Matteucci, vice president, Exar Power Management Products, conversions from 29 volts can be a challenge for many buck regulators: “The XRP7603, XRP7604 and SP7600 LED drivers easily convert from 29 volts to the 4 volts across the LED with a guaranteed minimum on-time of 100ns. The devices provide system architects and designers with a single scalable design solution capable of seamlessly supporting many LED lighting applications from 500mA to 2A. Dynamic brightness control is achieved through a PWM or analog dimming scheme and a programmable over current whilst an under voltage lock-out protection feature insures safe operation under abnormal operating conditions.”

Offered in a thermally enhanced SO-8 package and operating over the -40ºC to +85ºC temperature range, the XRP7603 and XRP7604 are now sampling.
