 Marvell targets ‘worldphone’ applications with quad-core processor that works on different network

 Marvell Semiconductor’s has released details of the most advanced single-chip quad-core processor for worldphone and tablet applications.

The PXA1088 system-on-a-chip combines four processing cores with advanced communications to enable low-power, high-performance mobile computing. A quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 is complemented by Marvell’s own WCDMA and TD-SCDMA modems. The device supports all global broadband standards, allowing users to roam the world without having to switch phones or purchase ‘local’ SIM cards.

Fully compatible with Marvell’s established dual-core 3G chips, the PXA988 and the PXA986, the new PXA1088 quad-core device features 3G cellular modem support with High Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+), Time division High Speed Packet Access Plus (TD-HSPA+), and Enhanced Data for GSM Environment (EDGE). It is targeted at low-cost 3G platforms and is designed to handle multimedia, games, high-definition video, and standard phone capabilities such as Bluetooth 4.0, Avastar wide-area networking, and hybrid location processing.

The PXA1088 system-on-a-chip gets its first outing on Stand 6C44 (Hall 6) at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain. Commercial production is expected to begin in 2H 2013

Improved LTE chip delivers better wireless data service
Complementing the PXA1088 quad-core processor Marvell has launched a single-chip LTE (Long-Term Evolution) data networking modem with TDD/FDD capability that delivers much improved wireless data networking in smartphone applications.

The new single chip LTE support all global 3G and 4G broadband wireless data networks standards, enabling seamless global roaming. It features support for 5-mode cellular modems, including LTE TDD and FDD, High Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+), Time division High Speed Packet Access Plus (TD-HSPA+) and Enhanced Data for GSM Environment (EDGE).

According to Marvell co-founder Weili Dai, Marvell has accelerated the pace of innovation and commercialization by bringing the industry’s leading TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE solutions into its quad-core mobile platform: “We believe that with our design win success we can support our partners to accelerate the mass adoption of LTE solutions around the world,” Dai said.

Visitors to the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona are able to see ZTE, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, demo a dual-radio, dual-standby LTE smartphone featuring Marvell’s new LTE solution.
